The 4Cs

Selecting a diamond is a considered decision. The 4Cs, Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat, were established by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and remain the universal framework for evaluating a diamond's quality.

At WILLIAM ÉDOUARD, every stone is measured against these criteria, ensuring each diamond we set performs with brilliance and character.

Diamond Cut

Cut is the mark of the human hand. It governs the way a diamond receives light, returns it to the eye, and comes alive in motion. Proportion, symmetry, and polish are considered together to determine a cut grade.

An exceptional cut reveals a diamond at its most luminous, unlocking its full brilliance, fire, and scintillation. A lesser cut, regardless of the quality of the rough, will always limit the stone’s potential. For this reason, particular importance is placed on cut when selecting a diamond.

Diamond Carat

Carat is the measure used to describe a diamond’s weight, and one of the defining factors in its perceived presence. While it is often associated with scale, carat is a technical measure of weight rather than visible size alone.

A diamond’s appearance is always shaped by more than weight in isolation. The way it has been cut, proportioned and finished plays a central role in how beautifully it presents, which is why the most compelling diamonds are those whose presence feels balanced, refined and harmonious.

Diamond Colour

White diamonds are graded on a scale from D, entirely colourless, through to Z, where warmer tones become increasingly visible. The rarest diamonds sit within the D to F range, where the absence of colour allows light to pass through the stone with exceptional purity.

Differences between neighbouring grades are often imperceptible to the untrained eye, yet they remain significant in rarity and value. Our collection is drawn predominantly from the D to G range.

Diamond Clarity

Formed under immense pressure deep within the earth, most diamonds carry tiny natural characteristics known as inclusions. Clarity refers to the number, size and visibility of these internal features, and is graded on a scale from Flawless (FL) through to Included (I3), with VVS and VS sitting among the finer clarity ranges.

In the majority of fine diamonds, these characteristics are not visible to the naked eye and can only be seen under magnification. When well chosen, clarity allows a diamond to appear clean, bright and uninterrupted in its beauty.
