Diamond certification plays a key role when selecting a diamond. Gaining a clear understanding of how certification works, what’s included in a grading report, and which organisations set the standards allows you to assess a stone’s quality, authenticity, and origin with greater confidence.
What is diamond certification?
Diamond certification, also known as diamond grading, is an independent assessment completed by a gemmological laboratory. The diamond is evaluated according to the 4Cs: cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. The resulting grading report provides clear details about the stone’s quality, helping you make a more informed purchase with greater transparency and confidence.
Diamond certification terms
A diamond certificate, issued after the grading process, will typically include the following details:
Grading report number: A unique identification number assigned to the diamond, allowing the report to be verified through the certifying laboratory.
4Cs: A detailed breakdown of the diamond’s cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight.
Additional grading details: Depending on the laboratory, the report may also include polish, symmetry, fluorescence, proportions, and measurements.
Diamond plot: A diagram showing the location of inclusions and blemishes within the stone.
Laser inscription: Some diamonds feature a microscopic laser inscription, often matching the report number, to help identify and verify the stone.
Gemological Institute of America (GIA)
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA): Founded in 1931, the GIA is a non-profit, public-benefit organisation globally recognised for its leadership in gemmological research.
Through ongoing discoveries, the GIA continues to expand knowledge of gemstones and their characteristics. It plays a critical role in protecting consumers through rigorous analysis, education, and grading services, while establishing internationally recognised standards. The GIA independently verifies the origins of many of WILLIAM ÉDOUARD’s diamonds and gemstones.
The GIA also introduced a standardised carat weight system, designed to ensure precision and consistency in diamond grading. This scale typically ranges from 0.01 to 10 carats, with each increment reflecting a defined weight category.
When selecting a diamond, certification remains essential in confirming both quality and authenticity. A certified stone offers clarity, confidence, and peace of mind throughout the purchasing process.
