A Guide to Diamond Carat Weight
Diamond carat weight refers to how much a diamond weighs, rather than its physical dimensions alone. As one of the 4Cs, alongside cut, colour and clarity, carat weight plays an important role in how a diamond is assessed, valued and selected.
This guide explores diamond carat weight in detail, including what it means, why it matters when choosing a diamond, and how the carat scale is used to compare stones.
How does the diamond carat weight scale work?
The diamond carat weight scale measures a diamond’s weight, with one carat divided into 100 points for accuracy. For instance, a 0.50 carat diamond is equivalent to 50 points, while a 1.00 carat diamond equals 100 points. This system allows for precise comparison between stones of different sizes.
Carat weight can range from very small fractions of a carat through to exceptionally large, rare stones, with certain ranges more commonly seen in fine jewellery.
Less than 0.50 carats: Diamonds in this range are generally more subtle in scale and are often used as accent stones or for delicate, understated pieces.
0.50 to 0.99 carats: This range offers a balanced size with noticeable presence, making it a popular choice for those seeking a refined centre stone without reaching the one carat threshold.
1.00 to 1.99 carats: Diamonds within this range are often considered a classic benchmark for engagement rings, delivering strong visual impact while remaining relatively accessible.
2.00 to 4.99 carats: Stones in this category are more substantial and increasingly rare, offering a more pronounced presence and typically commanding higher value.
5.00 carats and above: Diamonds at this level are uncommon and highly sought after, often reserved for statement pieces and high jewellery due to their size and rarity.
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) diamond carat weight grading scale
Founded in 1931, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is a non-profit organisation recognised globally for its work in gem research, education, laboratory analysis, and diamond grading.
Carat weight is measured with precision to create a consistent way of comparing diamonds by weight. While terminology can vary, diamonds are often grouped into broad size categories such as:
Melee: under 0.18 carats
Small diamonds: 0.18 to 0.99 carats
Medium diamonds: 1.00 to 1.99 carats
Large diamonds: 2.00 to 2.99 carats
Very large diamonds: 3.00 to 3.99 carats
Exceptionally large diamonds: 4.00 to 4.99 carats
Rare diamonds: 5.00 to 10.00 carats
Although carat weight has a strong influence on a diamond’s visual size, it should never be assessed in isolation. A well-cut diamond can appear more balanced, brilliant, and visually impressive than a heavier diamond with less favourable proportions, which is why carat weight should always be considered alongside cut, colour, and clarity.
